Multnomah County Domestic Violence Coordinator's Office Introduces Online Training Course Created by Planet Productions

Planet Productions, a custom eLearning company, recently completed an online course titled “Domestic Violence in the Workplace,” in conjunction with the Multnomah County Domestic Violence Coordinator's Office. The course was funded by an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training and education grant, and is available through the Multnomah County website (Click here). The training is also available on CD-ROM.

The Multnomah County Domestic Violence Coordinator's Office provides the community with a resource for the prevention and intervention of domestic violence. According to the U.S. Department of Labor Women's Bureau, "each year, nearly one million individuals become victims of violent crimes while working or on duty." When an employee is the target of attack in the workplace by an intimate, other employees may also be placed at risk.

Tailored to meet the needs of small businesses, the training program was specifically designed to meet minimal technology standards, in order to accommodate a range of workplace environments and the lowest common denominator of computer capabilities. The program details how employees and employers can identify and respond appropriately and effectively to incidents of domestic violence, and provides them with tools they can use to increase safety in the workplace. Planet's creative team of designers used a story-telling technique to portray details of one woman's experience with domestic violence and the related impact on her employment performance and overall work environment. The course is expected to increase the number of employers and employees in small businesses throughout Oregon who are made aware of domestic violence and general effects in the workplace.

Employees and employers who wish to address this issue in the workplace will find the computer-based training readily accessible and user friendly. The course features a modular design that allows learners to access small increments as needed, and can also be used as a resource directory.
